On July 1, 1975, Kelsey Grammer’s younger sister, eighteen-year-old Karen Grammer, was raped and murdered. In Karen, Kelsey reveals their past, celebrates their youth together, mourns her loss, and unearths his struggle for faith and healing in the decades since her death.
Karen by Kelsey Grammer delves into the tragic story of the author’s sister, Karen, who was brutally murdered at the age of eighteen. Kelsey was just twenty years old when his younger sister, a recent high school graduate, moved to Colorado Springs, where she was kidnapped by several men who had intended to rob the Red Lobster where she worked. They instead kidnapped Karen, raped her, and ultimately stabbed her to death.
Through this memoir, Grammer poignantly recounts the memories of his sister and the impact her loss had on his life and family. With raw honesty, Grammer explores the profound grief and devastation that followed Karen’s death, as well as the long and arduous journey toward healing. He bravely confronts the pain of losing a loved one to senseless violence, offering listeners a glimpse into the complexities of coping with such a profound loss.
Karen also serves as a testament to Grammer’s lifelong journey with grief and his struggle to defeat the sting of death with the memory of a life filled with joy—irreplaceable joy. In sharing his story, Grammer aims to help others who have experienced similar loss, offering solace and encouragement to cherish the love they knew, however brief, on their own path toward healing.
This book is a moving tribute to Karen and the brother’s love that survives her.

- Reviewed in Canada on June 25, 2025This was clearly one of the best reads I have ever experienced. I just wish I could reach out to Mr Grammar and let him know how much this book touched me. In oh so many ways. I'd like to return that favor and hope that he feels good knowing that his work on this book was just magnificent. Yes, he is all over the place in this book but that's what makes it perfect. If you understand. And I believe I do. Thank you Mr. Grammer.
- Reviewed in Canada on August 6, 2025Verified PurchaseJust random ramblings of an old man, with the odd reminder about how much he loved his sister. Boring.🥱
- Reviewed in Canada on May 28, 2025Verified PurchaseAlthough I am sympathetic for Grammer’s loss, this book needed a good editor. Disjointed describes this book to a T. I am wading through it but I don’t know if I will ever finish it, sorry.
- Reviewed in Canada on May 9, 2025I’m a fan of Kelsey Grammar as an actor, but less of a fan of his writing. I found the writing disjointed, and so, hard to follow. Nevertheless, his sister’s death has affected Mr. Grammar deeply, and the result is a very emotional read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably Raw
Verified PurchaseI just completed an emotional spiritual and tortured journey through a valley no one wants to walk. There are no chapters, at times the author jumps from the past to the future to the present, writing it exactly how it comes to him. Its fascinating and yes, frustrating at times but this is his journey, his heartache and his healing that he invited me to witness, I will respect the way he wishes to tell it. I love Grammer. I love his acting and I read about his sister many years ago but it was a brief article. As he wished I now know his sister. The things she loved, the free spirit she was. You will learn about Karen and you will learn how she died. At one point I wished he didnt detail it so much. The last words Glenn said to her before butchering her haunted me, i had to put the book down and take a break. There are 3 parts in this book that I cried freely. I won't spoil it. Well done Kelsey. I wish I could hug you. And thank you for introducing me to Karen.

5.0 out of 5 stars A loving tribute from a loving brother to his lovely sister
Verified PurchaseI finished the book today, July 28, which would have been (and on earth is) my big brother Ralph's 54th birthday. I have to thank Mr. Grammer for this book, as I felt some peace reading his words, not just about his sister Karen, but about others like myself whom have lost a loved one much too soon. I had my big brother with me till the age of 49, when as a passenger, on April 5, 2021, a box truck accident took his life, but not his spirit. Reading a book written from a brother about his sister literally over 40 years since her death, brought me close to Mr. Grammer, as you can hear his suffering, his pain, even his tortured soul in his words. I feel that pain every day and for others in a similar situation, I will tell you this book will bring you a small measure of peace knowing you are not alone. I feel as if I know Karen, who she was and who she is. The author did a superb job of correlating his memories (and others) into words in which the reader grows with knowledge regarding Karen and his life. The phrase 'butterflies don't sting' comes to mind for some reason. Perhaps Mr. Grammer knows. I can understand his early struggles with God, with Christ, and later, his peace with Him and His Son. Thank you for this book, Mr. Grammer. It gave me a small measure of peace, which is very rare indeed to find.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well....
Verified PurchaseI absolutely love Kelsey Grammer, and I was very anxious to receive and begin reading this book. I will say that I could feel his hurt and oddly enough, feel his sister's presence as I tried to take this journey with him. I know she is with God, and her pain is long gone. I also pray Kelsey Grammer's prayer that her perpetrators (or the one that is still alive anyway) will continue to pay for this unconscionable, almost unspeakable, horrific crime of brutal rape and murder.
Having said that, I must admit I had a hard time reading this story. I was expecting to hear about Karen, her life, her incredibly sad end, and the fight to keep her perpetrators in prison today. Mr. Grammer, bless his heart, went off on these tangents with all sorts of unorganized stories that were really of no interest to me as it pertained to what Karen offered this world during her short life and why she deserves the utmost justice.
Still, I hope to meet Mr. Grammer one day, and politely ask him to autograph my book.
