Only stereo comes out of the SPDIF optical

Only stereo comes out of the SPDIF optical
They advertise this card as 5.1. and I purchased this card to connect my PC to the 5.1 receiver using optical cable. They didn't mention that 5.1 sound would only come out of analog (3.5mm) jacks. Only stereo goes into the Toslink SPDIF output. After a few days back and forth messaging with ASUS they confirmed just that. You can only find this 'stereo only via SPDIF' if you go deep into customer reviews.

i got this for my gaming PC. i remembered what a difference a cheap sound card can make from my old gaming PC so i picked this up. the advantage is that the onboard sound youre probably using is eating up CPU cycles to process the sound. this is a processor for the sound so your main CPU doesnt have to fuss with it, like your discrete GPU. all i did was plug in this card, install drivers from site. then i ran CSGO benchmark map and 3DMark. i got a +45 FPS boost in CSGO and an extra 100 pts in 3DMark. the FPS boost probably wont be as much in more graphic intensive games, but it proves that there is a gaming performance boost. if you have a lower powered CPU a sound card is a good way to get more gaming juice out of it.

also, it makes things sound better too! how much better depends on what you were using before but for the price you cant go wrong with the gaming boost alone, so even i minor sound improvement is all bonus. i recommend discrete sound cards and NICs to everyone who wants a cheap hardware boost to their gaming rig.

S/PDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interface) is an audio transfer format interface. It transfers digital audio signals from one device to another without the need to first convert to an analog signal

Stop leaving negative comments just because you have limited understanding, SPDIF passes through the sound signal the way it is, and it's up to your AV to figure it out and what to do with it, if its 5.1, 7.1, or whatever
This is not a converter, if you need such then install ffdshow with ac3 filter on your pc first and make it convert to proper signal before passing it through to your AV, or just use analog output

After installing, I was stunned to learn that this card is 5.1 channel compatible but ANALOG ONLY! The digital out will ONLY transmit 2 channels which is INSANE to me. So much so that I can't actually believe it to be true, but every troubleshooting forum has reached the same conclusion...this is by design.

If you have no sound card and are looking for something basic, this is a fine choice. But don't be fooled into thinking you're getting a high quality card at a reasonable price. It does not do what you want it to do or what it implies it does.

    Shame on you Asus.

Plugged it in, started the PC and got sound from SPDIF. Just what the doctor ordered

Be advised, the software included shows me only 2 channel output, but I can confirm 5.1 output on 5.1 encoded files.

What I didn't like (and it's not the card's fault) was lack of ability to upmix stereo. A customer answered my question pre buying it about that ability and assured me that it did, but it does not. It "mixes stereo" apparently, but that is downmixing on recording. And I found no way to refute his advice. Perhaps he was speaking from experience with a higher end card which uses a different version of the software designed for the different chipset in the higher end cards.

I like the fact that I found the exact card appropriated to my Asus desktop, and since my husband installed i have a smother zoom meetings (regarding the sound). Easy to install as well.
