- Reviewed in Canada on March 13, 2024Verified PurchaseI just finished reading this book last night and have learned a lot. With many practical methods and tips, I feel much prepared to welcome our puppy in mid-April. This book will be handy for us to raise a well-behaved puppy.
- Reviewed in Canada on November 7, 2019Verified PurchaseFantastic balanced training book, I'm tired of people pretending you can stop biting with only a treat. Sometimes a stern correction is needed and it works instantly. I wasn't too interested in the "pre 8 weeks" phases since I am not a breeder but educational nonetheless. I've owned a couple dogs but there's lots of info in here that I didn't think of or better methods than my own. I found myself highlighting and making notes all over. Great guideline for first days of puppy ownership to adulthood, they, cover all phases and teach what to do and lookout for in each one. I wasn't aware of the length of the fear/avoidance stage of a puppy or when teething peaks. Highly reccomend for new owners especially.
- Reviewed in Canada on February 3, 2017Verified PurchaseGot a family pup, and went into a rabbit hole researching how to train it before he arrived.
As a kid years back, my experience with our family dog growing up was pretty standard. We said "no" and "bad dog" a lot, had problems with him running away, rubbed his nose in it when he dumped on the floor. I knew there had to be a better way.
Between Patricia McConnell, Sophia Yin, Ian Dunbar, and the (newer versions) of the Monks of New Skete we've been shown a totally different way. It's amazing... we train through positive reinforcement, never have to say bad dog, and now have a 9-month old puppy that we can pretty much walk off leash. Still working on his recall and some separation anxiety, but with these resources we feel totally solid in handling it.
As a total sidenote, I went for the science-based positive reinforcement over dominance theory for a couple of reasons. I had read a couple of Cesar Milan's books a few years back and actually found them quite thin on the actual, tangible "what to do". There was also something about the whole pack leader thing that didn't sit quite right with my knowledge of learning theory. From what I've been able to gather since having our pup in the house, all of that's totally valid... and I just so love the results we've seen from more positive oriented methods.

- Reviewed in Canada on January 6, 2021Verified PurchaseI am very happy with the advice given in this book. I have been using the techniques with my Goldendoodle puppy and she is adapting very well. She has mastered several commands and so far has been really good with recall, sit, stay and will do a few tricks. House training was fairly quick with just a few pee accidents and no poo in the house. She is starting to use a bell and will also bark to go out. She is almost 15 weeks old. I followed the book's advice.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 29, 2019Verified PurchaseWow! I didn't expect to learn as much as I did. I highly recommend for anyone getting a puppy. It truly helped me to understand a dog's development and psychological needs. A very different approach from many puppy-rearing books I've read.
- Reviewed in Canada on February 28, 2019Verified PurchaseI wish I would have purchased this book before getting my puppy but I'm glad I found it when I did. Ive been implementing many of the techniques that are described in the book into my puppies daily training and what is outline works well. The book describes how a puppies brain works and develops, it teaches training techniques and proper discipline and what supplies you need when getting a new pup. I can't recommend this book enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational reading for those raising a puppy
Verified PurchaseJust before our third German Shorthaired Pointer puppy was to arrive in our home, I decided to buy "The art of raising a puppy". I have thoroughly enjoyed reading it and find it to be an inspiration to make sure we do things right. The book is well written and easy to read. Particularly the chapters on crate training, early grooming and socializing I have found to be very useful but the book is full of little treasures and has helped all of us understanding our pup much better than we thought possible. Our pup "Fritz" is now eleven weeks old and the advice from the monks thus far has proven to be invaluable! We also have "How to be your dog's best friend" and the "Raising your dog with the monks of New Skete" DVD (ISBN 0-9656417-1-6). The DVD is great and helps my family members who aren't into reading to raise our pup the "New Skete" way! Yes, the monks are monks but their religious beliefs are never pushed down the readers' throats. Their style and philosophy however is pleasant and inspiring. I can't recommend it highly enough!

Totalmente recomendable.
