A gripping new fantasy novel set in Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover universe.

Darkover, a Lost Colony far out on the galactic rim, a world of telepaths, nonhumans, and warlords … a world about to discover the terrible destructive power of weapons of the mind …

Traumatized by psychic warfare as a child, a young woman with extraordinary psychic talents negotiates a treacherous path, risking unforeseen dangers to create a haven where she and others can use their skills for good.

In Darkover’s dim past, before the tumultuous Ages of Chaos, small kingdoms still vied for power with sword and spear. But with the rise of psychic abilities called
laran, unscrupulous leaders turned to half-trained sorcerers for an advantage. One such struggle arose between the realms of Hastur and its ambitious neighbor, Carcosse.
Leora Hastur is still a child when her
laran awakens, and the resulting crisis almost claims her life. Her beloved older sister, Neave, and her father’s small circle of telepathic workers manage to save her, but nothing can shield her from the horrors of the impending war. Leora’s younger sister perishes in the firestorm of laran-fueled destruction when Lord Carcosse and his sorcerer attack their home. Scarred and deeply traumatized, Leora is sent to a faraway Tower for healing. In the process, she grows to womanhood and develops her extraordinary Gifts, wanting nothing more than to live and work among fellow telepaths.
But war is brewing once more …
To prevent another catastrophe, Lord Hastur brokers an alliance, with marriage to Leora as part of the treaty. Rather than see others suffer as she has, Leora reluctantly agrees. As she and Neave travel to the wedding, one calamity follows another, from a flash flood to an attack by nonhuman catmen … and capture by ruthless Dry Towns slavers. To save her sister and their fellow captives, Leora must call forth a previously unknown Gift and summon the gods themselves to her cause.

Arilinn is the new, long-awaited adventure in the beloved Darkover series. It’s perfect for both devoted fans and those new to the world of the Bloody Sun.

Marion Zimmer was born in Albany, NY, on June 3, 1930, and married Robert Alden Bradley in 1949. Mrs. Bradley received her B.A. in 1964 from Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, then did graduate work at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1965-67.

She was a science fiction/fantasy fan from her middle teens, but wrote only for school magazines and fanzines until 1952, when she sold her first professional short story to VORTEX SCIENCE FICTION. She wrote everything from science fiction to Gothics, but is probably best known for her Darkover novels.

In addition to her novels, Mrs. Bradley edited many magazines, amateur and professional, including Marion Zimmer Bradley's FANTASY Magazine, which she started in 1988. She also edited an annual anthology called SWORD AND SORCERESS for DAW Books.

Over the years she turned more to fantasy; THE HOUSE BETWEEN THE WORLDS was "fantasy undiluted." She wrote a best-selling novel of the women in the Arthurian legends--Morgan Le Fay, the Lady of the Lake, and others--entitled MISTS OF AVALON, and she also wrote THE FIREBRAND, a novel about the women of the Trojan War. Her historical fantasy novels, THE FOREST HOUSE and LADY OF AVALON are prequels to MISTS OF AVALON.

She died in Berkeley, California on September 25, 1999, four days after suffering a major heart attack. She was survived by her brother, Leslie Zimmer; her sons, David Bradley and Mark Greyland; her daughter, Moira Greyland; and her grandchildren.

3.0 out of 5 stars So middling!

I didn't expect much but this was just blah.
I've been a fan of Darkover for about 50 years, so I know the world pretty well.
The characters stay mediocre, nobody to feel with, to rail against, to pity or generally give a fig about.
The whole drive of the book, the founding of Arilinn, comes off in the end as "what was the whole fuss about".
It doesn't add anything relevant to the lore, the characters stay bloodless, in general, a waste of reading time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful read about the Towers and people of Darkover

Zimmer and Ross last wrote The Laran Gambit, a novel about Darkover's encounter with a Laran gifted woman from Earth. This book takes place much earlier during a time of much upheaval in the structure of Darkover society. The seven Houses each have a Tower of their own, but finding the aristocracy's children who may develop laran, a psychic ability that must be trained otherwise it is often deadly, is haphazard. The book starts with King Aiden of Hastur and his young daughter, Leora. While Aiden is out battling skirmishes against his neighboring King who carries a long-forgotten grudge against Hastur, his oldest daughter, who trained at the local Tower, discovers that Leora is rapidly developing strong laran at a late age. The upper staff of the Tower including its healers arrive just before Aiden who is relieved to find that Leora has survived. But the uses of laran, once associated with healing bodies and minds, manuvering atoms on a molecular level or building impenetrable buildings is now rumored to the latest thing in warfare. Soon their castle is surrounded by the enemy who has a hired sorcerer who uses his laran to utterly destroy Hastur. However, while Hastur wins the battle, it pays a horrible price. Soon Leora is on her journey to the Tower and then the pressures of the outer world once again compel her. The action/adventure sequences are well-written, realistic, terrifying, and Leora's bravery is believable. Her growth from a young child bred for a specific lifestyle to an extremely mature and wide-thinking human felt normal for her experiences and her character. Every minor character felt rich and real, the world was solid and changeable, and I could almost taste the food, the air, and the smoke. Leora discovers new power within herself and vows to prevent any other person with laran from suffering while Aiden is convinced that he must take whatever action he can to unite Darkover to prevent the potentially explosive power of laran from destroying all life. Together they reshape the society of their world. I recommend this to non-Darkover fans as well as those who love these books.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Long Awaited Addition to a Much Loved Series

"Once drawn, this sword cannot be put back. This use of laran will change the face of warfare, not just for us, but for our children and their children's children."

Prophetic words spoken by Aiden Hastur near the beginning of this enthralling tale revolving around his daughter, Leora; from the trauma she endured as a child during the Hastur-Carcosse War, to her elevation to Keeper of Neskaya Tower, and what yet awaits her in the future.

"Arilinn" is set in Darkover's most dimmest past, before the tumultuous Ages of Chaos; when the Keepers at Nevarsin had only just begun to maintain records of the Gifts in the various Houses, and the notion of the laran breeding programme that would cause so much misery in the ensuing centuries, had only just begun to take root. The Comyn (of equals) had just been established, and the Comyn Castle was generations away from completion. Here, too, is the first chronological appearance of the Dry Towners: the kiharim; dubbed the "women-catchers".

In the notes, Deborah J Ross speaks of "Arilinn" as being the third novel in a multi-book project - I truly hope this is so, because she accurately captures the essence of Marion Zimmer Bradley's writing style so well, and there are so many stories of Darkover yet to be told - not least of which is the abandoned novel: "The Way of Arilinn"; the story of Cleindori, the renegade Keeper who, discovering for herself that the taboos on a Keeper were unnecessary, left Arilinn and created the science of matrix mechanics.

As vivid and moving as the best of Darkover novels. Hopefully, more will follow. A delight and impossible to put down.
