Fritz Graf here presents a survey of a god once thought of as the most powerful of gods, and capable of great wrath should he be crossed: Apollo the sun god.
From his first attestations in Homer, through the complex question of pre-Homeric Apollo, to the opposition between Apollo and Dionysos in nineteenth and twentieth-century thinking, Graf examines Greek religion and myth to provide a full account of Apollo in the ancient world.
For students of Greek religion and culture, of myth and legend, and in the fields of art and literature, Apollo will provide an informative and enlightening introduction to this powerful figure from the past.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but could have been more pleasant to read
Verified PurchaseI purchased this book alongside the Artemis one and I have to say I like the latter much better. This book is just a long block of information and, while it us fascinating, the delivery is really heavy. Better text formatting could have majorly improved the reading experience. Overall a great read, however, as it touches upon all the different facets of Apollo and his cult.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very comprehensive book about Apollo's aspects.
Verified PurchaseThis book gives an in depth history of the Greek God Apollo with chapters mainly focusing on his different aspects, such as: 'Apollo in Homer', 'Apollo the Musician', 'Oracular Apollo', 'Apollo God of Healing', and 'Apollo the young and the city'. There are 2 further chapters which are entitled 'Origins' and 'Apollo's Flourishing Aftermath'.
The book was well researched and clearly written. It's also part of a series called 'Gods and Heroes of the Ancient World' published by Routledge and I'm looking forward to checking out other books in the series.
However, the only things I found lacking in the book where information about festivals celebrating Apollo and how he was worshiped by the Greeks. But then again, I'm Pagan and especially interested in practical information about ancient worship.
This book was well worth purchasing and I'm sure I'll keep coming back to it for information.
