The set is lovely!
- Reviewed in Canada on August 2, 2023Verified PurchaseQuality is great, not sure why there are so many bad reviews on quality. These are old movies, filmed at a lower quality than what would be expected today. Realistically, these are totally watchable and love this series.
- Reviewed in Canada on July 26, 2024Verified PurchaseI am so happy that I finally own a copy of this set. I saw the first one on TV and recorded on our family VCR with the commercials and everything. My closest girlfriends and I watched it countess times in our youth. Such a beautiful story. Owning it brings back so many happy memories. I will cherish it.

- Reviewed in Canada on April 19, 2024Verified PurchaseFinally got around to trying to watch this. When we opened the pack, we found the cd case was broken in several places and the cd's were floating around inside instead of being secured. We were able to watch the first cd, but found the picture and sound quality were very poor (think a recording of a recording). Had this whole set years ago on VHS and the quality of that was better than this, so found it very disappointing.

- Reviewed in Canada on September 29, 2016Verified PurchaseI am an L.M. Montgomery "snob" as I started reading her books, beginning with the Anne series, as a young child and continued to re-read them repeatedly throughout my life. Thus I refused to watch this series when it first appeared on television as I believed I would be annoyed by too many changes to the original story. Now, many years later I have taken the plunge and purchased the full series on DVD. The first series is actually very well done, although Colleen Dewhurst as Marilla was a terrible choice. Matthew was superb and Megan Follows, while not the grey eyed, freckle faced Anne that Montgomery created, really does stand out and does her best to create a likeable, chatty Anne without overkill. I thought the writers of the screenplay did a decent job in creating the "essence" of the original, while not following the book to the letter. So after all these years, I must eat some crow, as series one was well acted and beautifully filmed on PEI.
However, series two is a mishmash of several of Montgomery's less likeable books. Rather than showing Anne at Redmond, living with her pals and going to university where she does get her degree and fends off the attentions of many suitors, all the while not knowing that she is deeply in love with Gilbert, the writers decide to use the book "Windy Poplars" and have her teaching in a girl's academy. In the book, she and Gilbert are already engaged and the story is told through their letters. I felt that this series really falls flat, as Windy Poplars without Gilbert is just dull and I didn't feel that the Pringle clan were well characterized. It isn't awful, but such a great opportunity was missed, as "Anne's House of Dreams" is such a lovely book, and Anne, newly married and hoping for children, suffers sorrow but meets interesting friends before leaving for her new home at "Ingleside". We could have watched her children grow up, fall in love, and eventually, go to war, but instead the times were manipulated, so that Gilbert goes to war instead of his sons. Thus series three is just silly and a big mistake. I longed to see the tender Walter perish, Jem become a man, and the strength of character and perseverance shown by an now middle aged Anne and her fun loving husband Gilbert as their young sons set off to war. Leaving out "Rilla of Ingleside" altogether, which vividly shows Canadians at war, and especially those at home, following every offensive avidly via newspaper only, is a huge loss. Every Canadian should read this book if they have not in their younger years. It is a testament to the enduring love of country shown by simple, small town boys and girls who gave up so much to support their loved ones in the trenches. And the heart ache of parents losing their beloved children far from home. In summary: series one is quite good, series two is a bit of a mess but still pleasant to watch, but series three has nothing to do with Montgomery's books except some of the characters' names. I am, though, happy that I bought the set, as I got it for a very good price and it has given me many hours, pleasantly spent, far away from the dreck of most of the really awful shows on television today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super.
