In the seventeenth century, witchfinders rule and paranoia thrives in a chilling novel about unrequited love, persecution, and betrayal by the bestselling author of The Road Beyond Ruin and Broken Angels.

In 1625, the Franconian village of Eisbach has been plagued by disease, famine, heinous crimes, and a merciless winter. Katarin Jaspers is the maidservant to the enigmatic Reverend Zacharias Engel, appointed by Rome to cure the village of suspected diabolism and save every God-fearing soul.

Zacharias soon finds his first witch, and the public burning of a local man could spell the end of misfortune. As a sense of peace settles over the village, Katarin finds herself increasingly infatuated with Zacharias, who is a disruption to her predictable existence and a balm for her cruel past. But peace for Katarin is short-lived. Margaretha Katz—the new midwife—is seen as a rival for the reverend’s attention. Fear and recrimination reach a fever pitch when a great tragedy sets the town fully on edge.

With the walls of winter closing in around Eisbach once again, rumours flourish and villagers turn on each other. Now, no one is safe from the pyre.

AN EVIL HIDES IN PLAIN SIGHT

Product description

From the Publisher

When the days start to chill, I like to curl up with an immersive novel that transports me to another time and place. Historical novelist Gemma Liviero always does that for me! Her newest, An Age of Winters, takes us all the way back to 1625 Bavaria, beset with ice storms, plagues, famine, murders, witches, and missing children.

The Reverend Zacharias Engel is summoned from Rome to put an end to all the catastrophes that have rained down on the village. While the attentions of this mysterious investigator are vied for, the cure he brings might be a worse fate for all.

This is a dark, twisted tale of infanticide, betrayal, and witch hunting, with a supernatural undertone, against a backdrop of fear and suspicion. It is a page turner that will satisfy any reader wanting the perfect escape from their own impending winter.

After downloading to my Kindle, I thought this book's subject matter would not hold my interest. I am a fan of police dramas and mysteries. Boy, was I wrong!!!
This book held me captivated to the very unexpectedly shocking end! It's an informative historical telling of It's time.
    I highly recommend this book.

A good read to take one back in time. It is a reminder what poverty, ill health and lack of food and proper shelter will do to people. The ending really was quite a surprise.

A somewhat plodding story with a nice, twisting ending; no one is totally innocent!

An Age of Winters take s place in the small town Eisbach, close to Wurzburg Germany in1629 during the little ice age period. This was also a period of endless witch hunts and executions.

Frau Katarin Jacobs, 19 years old but already a widow, is the housekeeper for the priest of the local parish. Reverand Stern, the former priest, has become unable to perform his duties do to illness and Reverand Engel, sent from Rome, has arrived to take Sterns place. His main mission is to root out sin and sorcery from Eisbach.

Eisbach, like many towns in northern Europe, has experienced several years in a row of subnormal temperatures resulting in failed crops, food shortages and declining sources of money. Also, there have been son horrendous murders recently, especially of children, and seemingly ritualistic killings of animals

Of course, sorcery and witchcraft are determined to be the cause o all these problems, resulting in a number of people being burned to death.

The story drags on as more people are suspected and accused of witchcraft, with Katerin and even Reverand Engel also being questioned.

Finally, toward the end, the truth of the story is revealed; neither Katarin nor Engel are totally innocent, but both escape Eisbach and survive.

I thought this story plodded along and lacked action until the end. I raised my rating from 3 stars to 4 stars because of the good ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gripping Tale of Love and Fear Amidst a Harsh Winter

I recently finished reading this product, and I must say, it was a captivating journey into a world filled with tension, intrigue, and historical richness. Set in the harsh winter of 1625 in the Franconian village of Eisbach, the story immerses you in a time when disease, famine, and crime plagued everyday life. The author does a fantastic job of creating an atmosphere that feels both chilling and claustrophobic, making you truly feel the weight of the villagers’ struggles.

The central character, Katarin Jaspers, is a maidservant to the enigmatic Reverend Zacharias Engel, who has been sent by Rome to rid the village of what is suspected to be diabolical influences. As he embarks on his mission, the tension in the village rises, culminating in the public burning of a local man accused of witchcraft. This pivotal moment set the stage for the moral complexities that unfold throughout the story.

I was particularly drawn to Katarin's character. Her growing infatuation with Zacharias provides a poignant contrast to the oppressive atmosphere surrounding them. The author beautifully captures her internal struggle—seeking solace and love in a world dominated by fear and violence. Their relationship adds a layer of emotional depth to the narrative, making the stakes feel even higher as tragedy strikes.

The introduction of Margaretha Katz, the new midwife, brings further conflict to Katarin's life, as she perceives Margaretha as a rival for Zacharias’s affection. The ensuing jealousy and fear create a palpable sense of unease that kept me turning the pages. The villagers’ descent into paranoia and suspicion, driven by the harsh winter and the pressures of their circumstances, is chillingly realistic. The way the author depicts how easily fear can turn friends into foes is a powerful reminder of humanity's darker impulses.

As the story progresses, the sense of dread intensifies, and the ultimate tragedy that befalls the village is heart-wrenching. I was left pondering the nature of good and evil, the consequences of fear, and the fragility of trust. The author skilfully weaves these themes into the fabric of the narrative, making it not just a tale of witch hunts and winter hardships, but a profound exploration of human relationships and societal pressures.

Overall, this product is a masterfully crafted novel that combines historical fiction with a gripping narrative. If you enjoy stories that delve into the complexities of human nature against a backdrop of historical events, this book is a must-read. It will leave you contemplating the lengths to which people will go when driven by fear, love, and desperation. Highly recommended!

My First Read selection for October 24
An enjoyable story which I read in an afternoon/evening

The story takes you into the horrors of the Catholic Church's witch hunts when superstition, ignorance, jealousy and fear were enough to condemn one to torture and a horrible death.

A series of deaths and murders lead you up a garden path to a deliciously twisty ending.
I guessed one of the twists but then it twisted again lol

I will definitely look out for more by this author

I am genuinely torn between rating this book as 1 star or 5 stars. I can't remember a time I've had such a visceral negative reaction to a book, nor written a review like the one I'm writing now. The story is complex enough, well enough written, stylistically. It flows, moves at a good pace and holds the reader's interest. It presents multiple voices to speak from different perspectives - an approach that is slightly confusing at first but soon makes sense. However, there is not a single sympathetic character in the entire novel, save those secondary characters inserted into the story line purely for the purpose of being gruesomely tortured (described in detail) and killed off in some horrible manner during the course of the story. (Even the character with whom we're supposed to feel most closely aligned is quickly shown to be a rather unpleasant person...and then some.) All told, this book felt almost sadistic to me. It offers the reader no hint of redemption, no hint of a meaningful lesson or of a character's moral growth, no light and pleasurable pastime (due to the darkness of the entire novel), no gift to the reader other than the message that everyone is black-hearted, cruel and not to be trusted. I can respect the author's freedom to write the tale she has chosen, and her execution of her work, but I wish I hadn't read this book. This is not a tale I needed to read. I could have spent those hours in a considerably less unremittingly dark and grotesque mental space. I got nothing good out of my commitment to this novel.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not sweet or loveable and definitely not a romance! Difficult to review.

I've thought about this for a few days before reviewing and I almost didn't anyway. I'm never torn about books, but this one is definitely an exception.
As others said, there aren't really any likeable characters (not always a bad thing) and the extremely surprising ending definitely saved this book.
Overall, it was just okay for me. Not overly interesting, but I did read to the end. It is well written and I suppose the characters are believable, if terrible, people. It's really all rather depressing!
