Product description

The boundless imagination of Terry Gilliam yields a dazzling fantasy of epic proportions. Inspired by the extravagant exploits of the fabled Baron Munchausen, this spectacle—born of a famously turbulent production—follows the whimsical eighteenth-century nobleman (John Neville) as he embarks on an outlandish quest that takes him from faraway lands to the moon to the belly of a sea monster and beyond, meanwhile waging battle against a vengeful sultan and the tyranny of logic. Packed frame to frame with special effects, mischievous wit, and colorful performances—including a young Sarah Polley as the Baron’s no-nonsense sidekick—the Oscar-nominated The Adventures of Baron Munchausen is a lavish celebration of the triumph of make-believe over reality. DIRECTOR-APPROVED TWO-BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES • New 4K digital restoration, approved by writer-director Terry Gilliam, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack • Audio commentary featuring Gilliam and his coscreenwriter, Charles McKeown • Documentary on the making of the film • New video essay by critic and filmmaker David Cairns about the history of the Baron Munchausen character • Behind-the-scenes footage of the film’s special effects, narrated by Gilliam • Deleted scenes with commentary by Gilliam • Storyboards for unfilmed scenes, narrated by Gilliam and McKeown • Original marketing materials including a trailer and electronic-press-kit featurettes, as well as preview cards and advertising proposals read by Gilliam • Miracle of Flight (1974), an animated short film by Gilliam • Episode of The South Bank Show from 1991 on Gilliam • English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing • PLUS: An essay by critic and author Michael Koresky

    4.0 out of 5 stars Bought on 2K decided I needed 4K

Quality is a bit variable, ranging from DVD at 480P to a convincing 4K. As the price was good I thought I'd take a chance.
My star rating mean: * - give it away, ** - give it shelf space, *** - give it hard disc space, **** - I'll probably watch this a couple of times a year after an initial flurry of viewings, - at least top 100 possibly above to 50.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gilliam’s classic gets deluxe treatment, brand new 4K scan.

I’ll be upfront about this-I LOVE this film. ‘The Adventures of Baron Munchausen’ channels all of the whimsy, humor and absurdity of Gilliam’s best work with a softer edge.

Starring John Neville, Eric Idle, Oliver Reed, Uma Thurman, Robin Williams, Sarah Polley, Jonathan Pryce, Allison Steadman, Winston Davis, Jack Purvis and Ray Cooper, the film focuses on the notorious liar as he tells tales about his visiting the moon, surviving in the stomach of a sea monster all the while, disputing the theatrical play about his life in a war torn European city.

The film bombed at the box office which is sad as it remains terrifically entertaining. I suspect that Columbia just didn’t know how to market the film (a problem for many Gilliam productions). Produced at a cost of 47 million dollars(Gilliam claimed that it wasn’t $40 million-less than that but admitted he went $12 million over budget), the film managed a meager $8 million in the U.S. According to Gilliam the film was pushed to fail-only 117 prints were created (an art house release usually has over 350 prints distributed). The film was started and completed under different leadership so Columbia-Tristar decided to do as little as possible to promote the film as the new leadership couldn’t take credit for it. It was among a handful of films that Columbia gave up on because it had been produced under studio head David Putnam. Again, according to Gilliam, the film did well in big cities but, when it came to opening the film up to smaller markets, they kept making up excuses as to WHY the film wouldn’t play well justifying their decision to limit the release and give up on the film. This despite excellent reviews and support receiving four Oscar nominations and four British Academy Award nominations (winning three).

The film had rumors of disarray and chaos around its production which turned out to be fabricated by the head of their completion bond company in trying to make them look good. Despite the difficulty in getting the production off the ground and being abandoned by the studio, the film has become an acknowledged cult classic.

The 4K remaster of the film from Criterion looks marvelous. Using a new 4K scan and restoration, colors are rich, vibrant and detail strong. It’s one of Criterion’s finest 4K transfers. The new Blu-Ray included isn’t shabby either. It looks exceptional.

The audio sounds great but dialogue in the 5.1 surround mix is quite strong. The marvelous musical score especially benefits.

The special features are full-so full that they needed three (1 4K, 2 Blu-Ray) discs; one for the film. The 2008 commentary from Gilliam and co-writer Charles McKeown is on both the 4K and first Blu-Ray disc. It’s filled with trivia about the film and Gilliam is always fun to listen to on these tracks.

Constantine Nsar’s three part documentary “The Madness of Misadventures of Munchausen” is the best special feature on the second Blu-Ray disc. It’s an exhaustive look into the difficulty that Gilliam ran into in getting the film completed. We also get a terrific overview on the practical visual effects for the film narrated by Gilliam that runs under 20 minutes.

There are four deleted scenes, four story boarded but scenes not shot are also included. Gilliam or McKeown provide the introductions. ‘Marketing Munchausen” is 30 minutes of preview material, etc. narrated by Gilliam.

There is also a video essay on the real Munchausen. There’s also a half hour “Southbank” show focusing on Gilliam’s career to 1991 and features Gilliam, Michael Palin and the dog from the film as ‘hosts’. This isn’t, unfortunately, subtitled.

Rounding out the special features is Terry Gilliam’s short 1974 film “The Miracle of Flight”.

There’s also a booklet with an essay on the film.

A terrific classic film from Gilliam that is loads of fun, this special edition is well worth it.

Gilliam is one of a kind. This isn't his best film, but it's a great film from the 80s that deserves all the love. Criterion has treated this one excellently, and it has somewhat washed the taste out of my mouth and the horror from my eyes of James Cameron ruining all his 4K releases. We can only hope someday Criterion does releases of those films.

For this one, detail is outstanding. Never have we seen the sets and garments and makeup look this splendid. It's a force of Gilliam we have here, and the day he is gone will be a lesser day for our reality. They don't make these kinds of films anymore. True genius garnered with loads of extras and an impeccable transfer. This is a five star package. Comes in a normal plastic case with booklet and 3 discs.

Great work. I only wish people like Lucas and Cameron treated their films like this.

Criterion finally released this Gillian’s most visually gorgeous and magical motion picture ever. Love the quality on 4K. The movie has never been this astonishing in home video until this edition. The soundtrack and every character’s portrait is amazing. The photography is absolutely breathtaking. Definitely recommended. Buy it before disappears on physical media. Don’t miss the chance to experience this fantastic movie.
