    Some IDE hard drives are old, For you to use a "single" 3.5" IDE hard drive, you will need to set the jumper to "slave" before turning on the disk. Be patient, Do NOT plug the USB cable into a USB-3 receptacle. All you'll get is a "Please insert a disk into the USB drive" message. Instead, plug it into a USB-2 receptacle and it'll be just fine. Once it shows up, then click on the USB Drive letter to open the drive. Check Disk Management (or Device Manager) to see if the computer detects connected SSD and HHD drives. If the disks are not already partitioned, partition them before using them. Otherwise, they will not be recognized by the computer or show up in Disk Management.
