The Accountant
Christian Wolff (Affleck) is a math savant with more affinity for numbers than people. Behind the cover of a small-town CPA office, he works as a freelance accountant for some of the world’s most dangerous criminal organizations. With the Treasury Department’s Crime Enforcement Division, run by Ray King (J.K. Simmons), starting to close in, Christian takes on a legitimate client: a state-of-the-art robotics company where an accounting clerk (Anna Kendrick) has discovered a discrepancy involving millions of dollars. But as Christian uncooks the books and gets closer to the truth, it is the body count that starts to rise.
The Accountant also stars Oscar nominee Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air, Into the Woods), Oscar winner J.K. Simmons (Whiplash, the Spider-Man films), Jon Bernthal (Fury, The Wolf of Wall Street), Jean Smart (TV’s Fargo, 24), and Cynthia Addai-Robinson (Star Trek: Into Darkness), with Jeffrey Tambor (TV’s Transparent, The Hangover films) and two-time Oscar nominee John Lithgow (Interstellar, Terms of Endearment, The World According to Garp).

- Reviewed in Canada on April 26, 2025Verified PurchaseA brilliant mind dealing with numbers. Meanwhile, there a underlying forces that involve murder, spies and espionage. A bookkeeper/accountant with a background of martial arts , fighting skills , accomplished sniper and an assassin. He is definitely a book, you cannot judge. The two worlds are going to collide. The body count will start to rise. Lots of gunfire. Oh yeah- hello Brother 🙏 Just a fantastic movie 🎥

- Reviewed in Canada on April 16, 2024Verified PurchaseBen Affleck gives a fine performance depicting autism with respect and sensitivity and Anna Kendrick makes a good maiden in distress. There are many holes in the script but if you are looking for a little above a standard actioner, this will satisfy you. I'm actually looking forward the Accountant 2 which as of this date is now in the development stage.

Verified PurchaseConsidering when this movie was filmed and that it followed on the heels of the first Batman movie with Ben Affleck starring, and where he takes on the role as a caped crusader donning the bat costume and fighting crime as a vigilante, we get a fresh take on that idea, in this movie the Accountant. Ben clearly wanted to continue in the same vein as his batman character as that is one of two plot points that this movie focuses upon.
1. He's above the law and also an elusive vigilante who can take out bad guys anywhere anytime without getting caught - he also has no issue killing them unlike his Batman character, though.
2. For whatever reason, and perhaps a personal motivation, Ben tackles the idea of being a grown up who is still battling his Autistic tendencies, where we receive multiple childhood flashbacks to help fill in the details. The writer didn't leave us hanging after introducing various nuances and then fills in the answers to those questions at the end.
I picked this up used on DVD as the previews didn't really do it much justice. There's a whole lot more going on in this movie and it keeps you wanting to stick around - in no small part due to the writing. IMDB gave it a pretty high score so I might not be overselling it here. I'll have to get the blu-ray for the next time I watch it.
Apparently, there's a sequel due out in 2025 - of course sequels usually are only half as good as the originals and considering this came out in 2016, odds are it's a hard story to tell 'again' with so much time lost. Which doesn't say one shouldn't give this one a watch. Origin stories are always better when they initially introduce the audience to set up everything - leaving much to be desired in a sequel that just carries the momentum. Who knows - since it hasn't come out yet.
In any case, Ben seems to struggle a bit with the off glancing autistics are known for, (not making eye contact and being emotionally withdrawn), but his quieter demeanor fills the rest of the character. Still, one can't help but wonder if he was really 'batman' in his mind while playing this character. There's so much presence and 'force' that he brought to the former that it's hard to know what to make of him in this new role.
Again, it makes for an interesting new character that is almost comic book worthy. Kind of like Bruce Willis' role in the movie 'Glass' where he's an ordinary guy but has some kind of superhuman qualities and fights crime after hours etc... This character is on the order of an autistic savant but not quite, and yet becomes an adult vigilante conveying the basic notion that autistics grow up to be adult vigilantes, which is silly.
Most are likely to face more obstacles or struggles than neurotypicals, and the glory train is just an illusion. I did however still like this movie quite a bit, so there's that.
