- Reviewed in Canada on September 30, 2019Verified PurchaseWe've had a few surround mixes of The Beatles over the years, including the excellent 2004 DVD-Audio release of Love feating a 24/96 5.1 MLP track, the fanmade 5.0 mix of Abbey Road using the stems from Rock Band (lossy), then we saw tracks from multiple albums get a 5.1 mix with the 1+ release, a 5.1 mix of Peppers in the 50th box set in 2017 and a 5.1 mix of The White Album in the 50th box set in 2018.
With Love we got a terrific, immersive surround mix - but this was mostly mashups and many have pined for the catalogue to get similar treatment where possible. Because an album like Please Please Me was recorded to two track, even stereo sounds silly and mono is the only way to go. You won't get a good surround mix of tracks from PPM with discrete elements. WIth 1+ we hoped we would see some of the studio material get decent surround mixes but the mixing was VERY tame unfortunately, and it was widely met with criticisms that it was nowhere near as adventurous as Love.
Peppers50 arrived and they weren't limited to the four track master because they add access to all the pre-bounce multitracks in pristine condition, or as pristine as 50 year old tapes can sound (and if you're heard it, the clarity is amazing). Unfortunately Peppers50 wasn't as adventurous as Love had been some 13 years earlier and the stereo mix suffered from aggressive dynamic range compression. In 2018 The White Album arrived and solved a couple of these issues, the mix was more immersive and the unlimited vinyl cutting files were included on the Blu-ray as the 2018 stereo mix (24/96), negating most reasons for choosing the more expensive medium if you additionally wanted the surround mix. Revolution 9 is really good in surround as is the album's opener, great clarity and fidelity and gone is the aggressive mastering found on Peppers stereo mix.
Well now it seems they got everything right and it's all come together in this amazing Abbey Road 50th package.
1) The mastering is terrific, fully dynamic and sounds great cranked (vinyl and Blu-ray)
2) The non-limited 24/96 vinyl master is included on the Blu-ray as the 2019 stereo mix, so if you are format agnostic you can get the Blu-ray and listen to the vinyl's source material directly
3) They have given us a Dolby Atmos mix
Now Peppers50 had a limited screening engagement for the Atmos mix Giles and Sam Okell created and it was lauded, a Sound on Sound article advises they created the Atmos mix AFTER the 5.1 mix, so the 5.1 mix is not a folddown of the Atmos mix. The 5.1 mix was not as well received. It's entirely possible the Atmos mix got as much about Peppers right as they've done here with Abbey Road. It doesn't just sound good, it blows away all the other Beatles surround mixes and takes its place upon the highest tier of all surround mixes - it's truly that bloody good!
I listen on a 5.2.4 Atmos system using modules for Atmos rather than direct ceiling speakers but the effect of Atmos tracks still comes across well with my ceiling being at the perfect height for this type of set-up. All throughout, the effects are wonderful. This is a really nice big mix with wonderful fidelity and terrific placement in the soundfield of all elements. Many emotional moments throughout, as a surround fan and a Beatles fan this truly is a gem. I love The Beatles and enjoy my 2014 all analogue-cut The Beatles in Mono vinyl set, I enjoy the 24/44.1 stereo remasters as well and feel they missed the mark with the 2012 stereo vinyl set by cutting from the existing 24/44.1 stereo masters created in 2009 rather than going back to the original analogue tapes like they did with the 2014 mono set and the 2014 releases of the red and blue albums. I'm format agnostic so I enjoy all the main supported formats as well as older formats like DVD-Audio and SACD that occasionally still see releases via audiophile lables like Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs. But Dolby Atmos (and other object-based audio codecs) provide a wonderful canvas for studio material and Giles and Sam have nailed Abbey Road.
Fave tracks? Well, there are so many, but boy oh boy does "Sun King" sound really sublime in Atmos, the jangling guitar refrain/answer that really sounds like it was an influence on Nick McCabe and some of the excellent early shoegazing stuff from Verve/The Verve, wonderful mix here. The End, stunning. Goosebumps. Goosebumps many times throughout the entire album.
What a treat, and what a perfect album for the team to finally nail every aspect of the mastering and mixing of the surround mixes.
Now we can only hope for an eventual standalone Blu-ray of the Atmos mix of Peppers to see if that one improves.
- Reviewed in Canada on October 1, 2019Verified PurchaseThis is probably my favourite Beatles album, it’s just chock full of goodness… this is a confident group of musicians who seem to be on the other side of the arguments and squabbles experienced in the making of Let It Be just months earlier. This 50th anniversary collection pulls together a new Giles Martin mix of the original album with two discs of outtakes and demos and a 5.1/Atmos mix along with a high resolution stereo version of the new mix on Blu-Ray. Overall Giles Martin continues to deliver quality mixes with this release… his goal of allowing these new mixes to sit comfortably with other modern songs is successful, everything sounds dynamic and modern while retaining the albums original simplicity. This easily the best this album has sounded, it stays true to the source but re-jig’s Ringo’s drums and Pauls bass slightly to pull everything out into the mix and make an already quality recording sound even better! In some cases some extra vocal and guitar bits and pieces have been brought up and aloud to exist in these classic songs, which kind of give them a fresh feel.
The 5.1 mix is excellent, it’s full and grounded in many spots, placing you inside the music but there are also some very cool moments strewn throughout this mix... the medley in the second half is pretty stunning. Overall this surround mix is such a great new way to experience this amazing album!
The package itself is a sturdy LP sized hard shelled slip case which contains a slide out 100 page hard cover book. The inside cover of the book features two pockets which hold the 2019 mix on CD and the Blu-ray… each is in a mini vinyl slipcase with the original album art on the front and back. The inside back cover of the book includes the two demo CD’s which also contain alternate photo’s from the Abbey Road photo session on the slip cases. The book itself is filled with forwards/Intros by Paul McCartney and Giles Martin, historical essays, an extensive track-by-track breakdown which have some interesting info contained within, not to mention the massive collection of photos, many by Linda McCartney, along with pictures of lyric scribbles, drawings, studio paperwork and more. Much like the Sgt Pepper and White Album sets, this one is well put together and worthy of it’s price tag.
At the end of the day, if you’re a fan it’s a must buy, simple as that. If you’re more of a casual Beatles fan, the simpler 2 CD/LP versions should suffice… either way the update in sonics and general quality of the new mix make this easy to recommend to all fans of music in general. :)

- Reviewed in Canada on September 21, 2023Verified PurchaseABBEY ROAD IS NOW A TRUE ICONIC MASTERPIECE With about as many of the Beatles Masterpieces crammed onto a single disc as any LP of the bands creation. SOMETHING, COME TOGETHER, MAXWELL'S SILVER HAMMER, there is hardly a track on the LP which is not a maximum exposure hit by the lads that over time has not managed to become a super track. Even the COVER ART managed to become a major piece of modern art somehow. While ABBEY ROAD is not my first pick in Beatles music it certainly is a great deal of fun and contains some really serious tracks on the disc as well.
- Reviewed in Canada on March 11, 2021Verified PurchaseI got caught up in the hype of the 50th remixes. This is my favourite Beatle lp and was wondering how they could possibly make it better? After researching I discovered that in the original mixes bass parts were mixed down so record needles wouldn't jump out of the grooves and I get that but I find the original mixes sound "warmer". This new remix definitely enhances instrumentation and also enhances vocal harmonies but to me it also sounds sterile. I will have to listen to them back to back a few times to maybe let my brain adjust but for now the original rules!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing
Verified PurchaseAbbey Road, the iconic masterpiece from The Beatles, has been etched into the annals of music history since its original release in 1969. Now, half a century later, the 50th Anniversary Edition on vinyl breathes new life into this timeless classic, delivering an unparalleled sonic experience that transcends the boundaries of time.
From the moment the needle touches the grooves of the vinyl, it's evident that this edition has been crafted with meticulous care. The warmth and richness of the analog sound transport the listener to the hallowed grounds of Abbey Road Studios, where the Fab Four once walked in musical unison. The vinyl medium, with its inherent warmth and depth, adds an extra layer of authenticity to the experience, capturing the true essence of the recording era.
What sets this anniversary edition apart is the meticulous remastering process undertaken by Giles Martin, son of the legendary George Martin, who was the original producer of Abbey Road. Giles' commitment to preserving the integrity of the original recordings while enhancing the overall audio fidelity is nothing short of remarkable. The result is a sonic tapestry that reveals nuances and subtleties previously unheard, allowing listeners to rediscover the album with fresh ears.
The packaging itself is a work of art, paying homage to the iconic cover art while incorporating new elements that commemorate the album's enduring legacy. The attention to detail extends beyond the sound quality, with the vinyl housed in a sturdy, high-quality sleeve that ensures the physical embodiment of Abbey Road matches the sonic excellence within.
Abbey Road's 50th Anniversary Edition on vinyl is not merely a reissue; it's a celebration of musical brilliance and cultural significance. Whether you're a seasoned Beatles aficionado or a newcomer exploring the magic of Abbey Road for the first time, this edition serves as a gateway to an era when music was crafted with passion, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to artistry.
In conclusion, Abbey Road's 50th Anniversary Edition on vinyl is a must-have for any serious collector or music enthusiast. It not only pays homage to one of the greatest albums of all time but elevates the listening experience to new heights, reminding us all why The Beatles continue to be an enduring force in the realm of popular music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Abbey Road
Verified PurchaseESSENTIAL ALBUM!!! One of rock's greatest albums by the Fab Four. It's one of my personal favorites & it's a rare thing when I don't play it. The album hit #1 on the charts & deservedly so. Without a weak moment, this album flows from beginning to end; the Beatles once again proving their prowess in the studio. This was actually the last album that the Beatles recorded but, due to the untimely disappearance of Phil Spector, Let It Be was the last album released.
Abbey Road had two incredible hits released from it, "Come Together" which topped the charts #1 & "Something" which peaked at #3 (what???). Somewhat of a surprise was that wasn't a McCartney penned tune released as a single, though Sir Paul tried everything he could to get "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" released as one. But, let's face it, as light as the song sounds, mass murderers isn't great subject manner for lyrics. "Oh! Darling" was the song that should have released as a single. It's in 6/8 time & is a kind of throwback to old rock 'n' roll. McCartney's vocals on this song are some of the grittiest he ever recorded. "Oh! Darling" was one of the best album tracks on any Beatles album. "Octopus's Garden", written by Ringo, is non-essential. Then, what was side 1 on the vinyl record, closed with Lennon's "I Want You (She's So Heavy)", a great bluesy riff & solid vocals makes this a must-hear song. With it's heavy riff-laden slow fadeout makes it a perfect song ending that side of the record. This part of the album was a concession to Lennon's desires to record a straight ahead rock album.
The other side of that coin is that side two was to be McCartney's side with his desire to make a more continuous rock-suite, this didn't quite happen but many of the songs do segue from one to the next. This side began with Harrison's "Here Comes the Sun". It's one of his best songs & could have been released as a single. "Because" is a slow song with a lot of three part harmony. It's some of their best harmony work ever recorded. It's amazing in light of the fact that when each one recorded his vocal, the other two weren't even present. The proper part of the rock suite begins with "You Never Give Me Your Money". This theme would recur on a later song on Abbey Road; this is where McCartney began incorporating this idea into his music, he would use it time & again in his solo recordings. "Sun King" follows next & was originally titled "Here Comes the Sun King", Lennon used some faux foreign language words to give it the feel that he wanted. Two more Lennon fragments follow, "Mean Mr. Mustard" & "Polythene Pam". Both have humorous lyrics, the latter one I found to be very comical. Lennon was a master of lyrics, able to be humorous & insightful at the same time. A McCartney song is next, "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window", it's a nonsensical title but the line "she could steal but she could not rob" is a classic. "Golden Slumbers" is a beautiful McCartney composition though he did nick some of the lyrics from a 400 year old poem by Thomas Dekker. "Carry That Weight" follow & is a great singalong, the musical & lyrical theme from "You Never Give Me Your Money" is repeated here. What was listed as the final song in the initial Abbey Road release is "The End". The title is a prophetical one & one of the most adventurous things they ever did. We get a short drum solo from Ringo, the only one that was recorded, there's an incredible three guitar lead where McCartney, Lennon & Harrison take turns playing their riffs, then we get to the slow ending. Lennon commented on the line written by McCartney, "the love you take is equal to the love you make", Lennon thought that was one of the best lyrics that McCartney ever wrote. This is all followed by "Her Majesty" the shortest Beatles song recorded. It was really a throwaway but was saved by an engineer & spliced on to the end of "The End" because it had been instructed to never throw away anything that had been recorded.
Unless you're from somewhere else (say, a galaxy far, far away) then you've heard this album. One of the most creative pieces of music in the annals of rock 'n' roll!
