This is a decent portable scanner with respect to, well, everything except the scanned results. I have had many of these document scanners, portable or otherwise, in the past going back to the mid 1990's, and unfortunately this particular one suffers the same issues with some of the portable document scanner that I had and it's the ability (or the lack thereof) to compensate for camera shake or in this case, scanner shake for the lack of better words. ≡ Physical build The physical build quality appears to be pretty decent; it doesn't feel cheap and although it's entirely plastic as all others are/were, the overall look and feel as well the buttons and whatnot are generally quite good for what it is. The LCD display is old-fashioned but works just fine nonetheless. ≡ Features With respect to features, it has 2 modes; JPG and PDF, as well as 3 scanner resolutions (300, 600, and 900 DPI) which are more than sufficient in most cases. For example, the picture taken with my cell phone (say, at 4000 x 3000 resolutions) has a DPI of 189 if it were to be printed out in standard 9.5x11" paper and that is for the most part high enough quality to be viewed on the screen. For the most part 300 DPI would be sufficient for nearly all document types in most cases. In addition, it also comes with a 16GB Micro SD card which is nice. You can set time and format the SD card directly from the scanner if necessary, and the stored files on the SD can be read directly off of the scanner if it's connected to a computer via its USB-C port as ordinary storage device. Of course, you can always read the files from the SD card directly. Again, feature-wise, it's quite capable given its size and footprint. ≡ Performance Unfortunately, it does require a flat surface where the scanner can move through without kinks or any jerky movements and that is particularly NOT that easy to do with a single piece of paper especially if it's just small enough where there is little room to hold the paper in place such as when I was scanning the manual of this product (pic 16/17). I should note that it does NOT really require a steady hand; what it REALLY requires is the ability to move or glide through the document or piece of paper that you wanna scan in a manner that's a straight line all the way through at a CONSTANT speed and relatively SLOW pace. It's not difficult but it certainly ain't as straightforward as it ought to be depending upon the paper type and the surface it rests on. This was exactly the issue with some portable scanner that I had in the past because it's simply not easy to get a good quality output (or at least good enough quality that I'd like to have). It does get trickier in a curved surface such as pages from a book. If you can't maintain adequately constant pace that' reasonably straight, you will get outputs, amongst many others, similar to those in the samples (pic 12-16). Scanners with feeders would completely eliminate this particular issue but of course you can't scan books with 'em unless you don't care that they remain as books after you are done with 'em. ≡ Value All things considered, this is another one of those products that's good on paper but not entirely and adequately functional in practice. The fact that the same issue remains after nearly 20 yrs means either we have absolute no clue on how to resolve that issue or this is simply a product with outdated technologies at its core. In either case, I had high hopes but it didn't deliver, at least not to a point where I needed it to be. However, it is reasonably priced at $80 for everything else it provides as well as its overall build quality. Your mileage might vary.
