From the manufacturer

Pack light. Go big.
When photographing birds, wildlife, sports or action, mobility can make the difference between nailing the shot or missing it altogether. The AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR is a fraction of the size of most full-frame 500mm lenses, freeing you to be as nimble as your subjects.

Super-telephoto Reimagined
Proprietary Phase Fresnel technology
For nearly two centuries, Fresnel lenses were used in lighthouses to project a strong beam of light. By harnessing the idea in reverse¡ªfor gathering light instead of projecting it¡ªNikon engineers can create lenses that are shorter and lighter, with the same image quality and zoom power of much larger lenses.

Versatile and Durable
Ready for the field The AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR is extensively weather-sealed and includes a protective front meniscus with Nikon¡¯s Fluorine Coating (FLC), which repels water droplets, dust and grime and easily wipes clean.
Travel light
Nikon¡¯s smallest, lightest full-frame 500mm prime lens ever¡ªapprox. 9.3 inches long and 3.2 lbs.
Bring the world in reach
Powerful 500mm focal length (750mm equivalent on DX-format) brings the shots that matter in reach.
Shoot in the moment
Handheld vibrations are tamed by VR image stabilization equivalent to a shutter speed 4.0 stops* faster.
Outstanding image quality
When combined with Nikon¡¯s Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass and other NIKKOR glass elements, the Phase Fresnel element produces high resolution, high contrast images with beautiful background blur.
More reach when you need it
When shooting with a DX format DSLR or a full-frame DSLR in DX-Crop Mode, the AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR produces a whopping 750mm equivalent angle of view. Add the optional AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E III for 1.4x more reach with only 1-stop loss of light and maintain autofocus.
Fast autofocus
Lighter, more compact optics don¡¯t just benefit your mobility¡ªa lighter focus lens group allows the autofocus system to focus faster, too. With the AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR, Nikon¡¯s Silent Wave Motor (SWM) is able to operate at peak performance for fast, quiet autofocus.

- Reviewed in Canada on June 12, 2023Verified PurchaseWas worried about spending this much as I already have a 200-500mm and a sigma 150-600.
The 500pf focus is faster, detail is better and is so much lighter.
Love love love this lens.
Also it shipped and arrived fast
- Reviewed in Canada on September 15, 2021Verified PurchaseWhite ink smudged on the lens barrel.
- Reviewed in Canada on March 19, 2020Verified PurchaseNikon nailed it with this lens, super fast focusing, very well built, sturdy yet lightweight, using a Teleconverter is still up in the air, but very happy with the crisp images by itself!
- Reviewed in Canada on September 2, 2020Verified PurchaseThis lens seems to be the best one I have ever used with superior sharpness and speed. Awesome indeed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Super sharp, super light what¡¯s not to love
Verified PurchaseThis lens is amazing, super light and super sharp. I was very lucky to get one of these lenses due to the demand being so high. I did some comparative shots to the 80-400, 200-500, sigma 150-600 and sigma 500 f4 and the difference in sharpness was significantly better when using this lens even wide open. The only thing that would make this lens better was if it was an f4 or lower and for some reason I struggle to get the lens hood to fit in reverse. I don¡¯t think it¡¯s that expensive for what you get, a light and super sharp ultra zoom. I¡¯ve taken it to Tanzania on safari and didn¡¯t notice much difference in sharpness compared to the 300 f2.8 which says quite a lot.

5.0 out of 5 stars I¡¯ve wanted one for years ¡
Verified PurchaseIt was on sale. The same price as 2nd hand units, so I finally jumped.
Very happy with product and the usual prompt delivery
My only disappointment was the box was loose inside the Â鶹Çø box. It may have been subject rough transport ¡
No sign of damage though

5.0 out of 5 stars SMALL, LIGHTWEIGHT, FAST FOCUSING, SHARP!
Verified PurchaseI have used a Nikon 200-500 for the past 6 years, and have loved it ... it produces superb, crisp, images, especially for its price. To be honest, the images from The 500 PF are maybe slightly better, but close in quality to the 200-500. What makes this lens more desirable, and worth the extra money is its small size, light weight, and extremely fast focusing.
As an older guy, the size and weight are a welcome change from the heavy 200-500. The focus speed is much faster, blistering fast, ... very close to the speed of the Nikon 70-200 f2.8 E FL. Combined with a fast body, like a D500, or a Z9, the 500 PF with its fast focus, and the size and weight making for quicker handling, are likely to get many more of those crisp images.
