Box damaged and tiny scratches on disc
The plastic wrapper was torn on the upper left corner, with a sharp dig in the box cover in the shape of an inverted V. Then there is a group of tiny scratches midway between the centre and the edge of the disc. Makes me wonder if it was a rejected item. The disc plays as it is supposed to, and this restoration is excellent. The poor score is for the ’product’, in this case a disc in a box. At this price I didn’t expect that. EDIT: the disc-set was quickly replaced by a better looking one - though it’s still not impeccable as the copies I saw at a nearby store.

    I just want to make clear for other customers that my copy had no technical flaw on it in regards to the fade-out in question. It's the scene with Dr. Floyd talking to the Russian Scientists on the space station. After he leaves them, it's supposed to fade to black, but early pressings of this disk had a hard and fast cut to black, which is not how it was edited originally, so in order to have the film as Kubrick intended, fans would want the correct fade edit. It is clear that newer copies in Canada have now been corrected, because mine is perfect, though this doesn't necessarily guarantee that every copy being sold right now is the corrected version. I am glad that at the very least, we have corrected copies being shipped and I was lucky enough to get one. The UPC code on mine is also 883929638451 , the same as what one other reviewer posted (and who apparently had the hard/incorrect fade), so it is a bit confusing why there is a discrepancy.

    Looking past this, we have been treated to an incredible release here. The image quality is scary good. It's a flawless and very film-like transfer with grain fully intact. The restoration team has gone to great lengths to give us the cleanest and most pristine looking version of the film yet, with detail levels very high. The Dolby Vision HDR grading also does an incredible job of providing increased depth, contrast, and amazing colours. I was in awe the whole time while watching on my 65" Panasonic OLED screen. Though truthfully, this demands to be seen on a much larger screen, and one day I hope to have a 4K projector and large screen to enjoy this Cinerama presentation on. It'll probably be the first disc I pop in.

    The DTS HD Master Audio 5.1 sound is just as superb. You have two choices for mixes - a modern 5.1 remix and the original mix remastered in 5.1. I briefly sampled both, and they are very close. I prefer the modern remix because the musical sections sound a bit cleaner, and the bass overall is more robust. There is no DTS:X or Dolby Atmos mixes here. I think that was a cost-cutting issue because I understand the visual restoration was a huge undertaking. I'm not complaining at all because although there are a couple moments on here where overhead effects could work well, the 5.1 does an amazing job of immersing you in the films many tense moments. The LFE that occurs during the infamous Stargate sequence is unreal.

    The packaging is also stellar on this. Really nicely done. I'm not a fan of the screen cap choices they made for the included postcards though. They're nice to have, but there are better moments in the film they could have grabbed from. The included Blu-ray disc also has great quality in it's own right. The digital code in mine expired in 2019, but that's ok because I don't need it.

    With the fade correction, this is easily a 10/10 release and a must for classic film fans, sci-fi fans, or anyone looking to see what the 4K UHD format can really do.

    J'ai expérimenté 2001 avec la version 4 k restaurée. C'est une expérience incroyable de voir ce film mythique avec toutes les palettes de couleur très dynamiques, le noir profond et les scènes de blancs étincelants. La version comporte la langue française doublée d'époque que je qualifierais de parfaite nul besoin de se plonger en anglais.
    La fameuse scène no.9 du groupe de russes en conversation ou il y avait un fade-out manquant est conforme, le fade-out est présent (oouuuu je commence à être un nerdz !) Il n'y a pas d'extras à part des commentaires. J'ai acheté par curiosité en voulant comprendre pourquoi ce film est un chef d’œuvre ? Et bien oui je suis stupéfait, comment est-ce possible d'avoir réussi à filmer des scènes en apesanteur à cet époque, créer des concepts à cet époque qui aujourd'hui semblent banals ( la scène ou les 2 astronautes déjeunent avec leurs tablettes ). En fait il y a 4 films distincts qui font ce film. Je ne pense pas avoir compris toute l'essence de ce film en une seule écoute. Ce qui est le plus stupéfiant c'est le ballet orchestré par kubrick des objets (stations spatiale, planètes, ombres avec le soleil ) avec la musique parfois joyeuse parfois inquiétante, mystique. La confrontation entre l'intelligence artificielle et l'homme. Je vous conseille fortement !

    The visual quality of this film is truly remarkable. A couple of the shots of this 4k release had me staring in pure awe. It's just so rich with colors and details. Great example of movie magic.

    The film, while a classic in every sense of the word, is honestly not for everyone. It can be a bit of a slog at times, and it overindulges with long moments of the movie coming to a screeching halt and not really progressing.
    That said, it can also be thought provoking and, despite its age, still great looking and believable. This 4k version of it is simply stunning.

    Regardless of whether or not this type of film is for you, it stands as the gateway achievement for sci-fi/fantasy cinema F/X without which Star Wars and like films could not have been made. Unfortunately there are technical issues that fail this edition and the company is unwilling to take responsibility. My copy has begun to degrade and now where there were no issues the disc is freezing up. One would hope that as a consumer we would be afforded some protection from substandard production but hey, this is Canada, so just keep dumping...

Then I got the 4k Version. This film is amazing - the music, the visuals. Apocalypse Now Final Cut was my, without a doubt, favorite 4k release, but now 2001 tops it!
