Hand grinding in itself can be a tedious task in some cases, but then again this applies to any hand grinder, including this one. The J-ultra is however incredibly consistent and uniform in its grounds, with its conical titanium coated burrs made for durable use. This also implies that there will be more fines contained in the grounds making for a thick bodied and chocolaty shot of espresso, which is greatly appreciated in milk drinks. The design is pleasingly sleek and compact, taking little room and being is easy to grip.

The J-ultra was designed with espresso in mind, it however does an excellent job for pour-over or any other coffee brewing method. Changing your grind setting is simple and easy with the upper dial, and the J-ultra is meant to come pre-calibrated, just make sure you don't grab onto the dial while grinding as you may accidentally change the setting. It also comes with a nice magnetic catch cup which spares you from having to twist it open and closed on every use. While the grinder is durable, you might want to watch out dropping it, as it may throw off the calibration and knock components onto one another.

I personally use mostly medium to dark roast, but keep in mind that blonde espresso beans are particularilly tedious to grind. With hand grinding already needing some elbow grease, one advice I can give in this case is feeding the beans in small amounts at a time when grinding. There may also be a bit of static electricity that makes the ground stick to the catch cup or right under the lower burr. This is a common occurence with metallic grinders, and one trick is to very slightly wet your beans by adding a spray of water and shaking them around in a container (not inside the feeding chamber). If you ever need help finding the right grind setting for your usage, there is a chart on the official website.

TL;DR : Very consistent, pleasant design with a magnetic catch cup and an easy to use grind setting, compact and makes for chocolaty shots of espresso. Good for any brew method, but will not prioritize clarity. If you are more pour-over focused, or use other methods of brewing coffee and like clarity and light taste, go for the K-ultra.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive
Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2025

I cannot say just how much I enjoy this hand grinder. I have three other brands of hand grinder, all more budget friendly, and the quality between those and this J-ultra is night and day.

Let us start off by talking about the build quality. The bearings and springs are clean and well machined. The grinder comes apart easily for cleaning and is a breeze to calibrate afterward. Said bearings are silent when you turn the crank, without beans, and the action is smooth once you do add your coffee beans. The clicks the dial makes are smooth but reassuring. The crank handle is well machined, and the locking mechanism is easy to use. The catch cup magnets are great. Strong enough to not detach accidentally in use but not so much that it hard to take off when you are ready to make your coffee. And finally, the grip is great and feels like it will not slip after a few months of use like I have had happen with other grinders.

Moving on to functionality I will say that it is easy to crank this with even lighter roasted beans. Or as much as can be expected from a hand grinder and a light roast coffee at an espresso setting but I digress. While it is easy to crank it is still fast, under 45 seconds for me, on most coffees with an 18 gram dose in 49/51/54mm baskets and a little longer on 58 as I have to grind finer (about 55 seconds).

The dial is quite nice and having 8 microns of adjustment is insane. I almost always change settings 3-4 clicks at a time if I am dialing in as I know that I can pull a shot at 30 seconds on one setting and one click may give me a 29 second shot. It is so granular that I might even get another 30 second shot (this could even come down to puck prep or temperature differences in your process). As such this allows you to dial in by taste a lot easier. Say you pull a shot at your desired time (I like 28-32 seconds) but something tastes just a little astringent or a little sour, one click could change the flavor ever so slightly without changing your time or yield by a noticeable amount. This amount of granularity is also nice with manual machines like levers (or picopresso or robot etc). It just makes pulling a shot that is "almost there" that much easier. It is hard to explain but if you run a manual machine, you know that they can be finicky.

Flavor profile wise, I find I like this better than some of my electric grinders. It is very good at pulling more traditional shots (think thick and syrupy body) but it produces a lot of fines, so it is great with longer 4:1+ ratios as well as it doesn't encourage channeling like some of my other bur sets do. I do find that even if it is good at pulling traditional shots it does also highlight acidity in those shots. I tend to get good body but more up front acidity than astringency. That is, unless you push it too fine on too light of a roast. No ristrettos on ultra-light filter roast but that isn't a pleasant experience for me anyway.

Now, the one thing that I miss about having a screw on catch cup is that it fit in my portafilter/dosing ring better. This cup has a very large diameter. But that is me nit picking. And the grinder, with the handle on, will tip over if you leave it standing up so remove the handle!

I can't speak to longevity as I've only put about 3 kilos of coffee through it at this point, but I have other 1zpresso products that haven't given me any issues.

If you think this grinder is for you, it is. I wouldn't hesitate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Grinder!
Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2025

This Grinder rocks! Its smooth and super adjustable! I use it for Espresso and it works well! I'm now saving lots of money by making my Espresso at home rather than going to a shop. It is larger than a C2 chessnut grinder, which was great for pour over, but lacked for espresso. The bigger size gives room for your hand under the crank. You will need that so you are not gripping and turning the magnetic basket. The magnetic basket is nice and fairly strong, but I feel that could be a failure point at sometime in the future. Taste is good and grind adjustment is very minimal so you can dial in. Better than spending several hundred dollars for a mechanical grinder, only takes about a minute or less to do a complete superfine grind. Price is expensive, but not really if you are getting into the espresso coffee game. For practicality I wouldn't go above this grinder.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Game-Changer for Coffee Aficionados: The 1Zpresso J-Ultra Manual Grinder
Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2024

As someone who revels in the art of coffee-making, I couldn't resist adding the 1Zpresso J-Ultra Manual Coffee Grinder in Iron Gray to my collection, especially for travel purposes. My initial intent was to pair it with my OutIn Nano portable espresso machine for those on-the-go moments. However, what I didn't anticipate was how the J-Ultra would transform my home brewing experience, challenging the reign of my beloved Niche Zero grinder.

    **Build Quality and Design:**
The craftsmanship of the J-Ultra is nothing short of impressive. Its robust iron gray body not only exudes an air of sophistication but is also built for endurance. The foldable crank is a genius touch, making it not just space-efficient for travel, but also a delight to operate. The ergonomics are spot on, providing a comfortable grip and smooth grinding action that makes the manual process not just bearable, but enjoyable.

    **Grinding Precision:**
One of the most standout features is its remarkable precision. While I have always appreciated the accuracy of my Niche Zero, the J-Ultra surprised me with its ability to make very precise adjustments. The shifting mechanism, allowing changes of as little as 8 microns, lets me dial in the perfect grind size with an almost surgical precision. This level of control is a dream come true for any coffee enthusiast looking to fine-tune their grind to perfection. The pyramid scale on the dial is supremely helpful to understand how many rotations you're on so there is no need to restart at #0 to redial.

    **Performance and Experience:**
Grinding beans with the J-Ultra is not just a task, it's an experience. There's a unique satisfaction that comes from manually grinding your beans, and the J-Ultra elevates this experience. The consistency of the grind is commendable, rivaling even the best electric grinders. Whether it's a fine grind for a rich espresso or a coarser one for a French press, the J-Ultra delivers with remarkable consistency.

**The Journey to Find the True J-Ultra:**
Navigating through the mix-up with the 1Zpresso J-Max in reviews was a bit of a challenge. With the J-Ultra being relatively new, authentic reviews are scarce. But after sifting through and finally getting my hands on the real deal, I can assure any prospective buyers that the effort is worth it.

    **Conclusion:**
The 1Zpresso J-Ultra Manual Coffee Grinder is a testament to the beauty of manual grinding, blending precision, quality, and aesthetics into one compact package. It has not just been an addition to my coffee gear; it has revolutionized my coffee ritual. Whether you're a travel buff looking for a reliable companion or a coffee purist seeking to elevate your home brewing game, the J-Ultra is an investment you won't regret. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful espresso grinder!

I love everything about this grinder. Perfect heft, external gauge that's very easy to quickly set yet not too easy to accidentally change, good speed and capacity, and very little retention. And definitely loving the magnetic catch cup, which is very secure yet easy to remove when done grinding, as well as the sturdy folding arm and comfortable wood knob. Plus, it looks great, and the case it comes with is functional, very well made and also great looking.

After getting this and putting it through its paces, I'm no longer surprised at all at what they cost. Well, maybe a little surprised they don't cost even more than they do. Really makes my old Porlex Mini that I bought for Aeropress use nearly 12 years ago seem like a cheap toy.

Using this for brewing espresso with a Flair Pro 3 but might try some other coffee grinding uses with it at some point, while of course keeping in mind that this one is optimized for espresso.
