Terry Gilliam's Sci-Fi Classic Makes It's Debut on 4K Ultra HD Disc!
THE FUTURE IS HISTORY
Following the commercial and critical success of The Fisher King, Terry Gilliam next feature would turn to science fiction and a screenplay by Janet and David Peoples (Blade Runner, Unforgiven) inspired by Chris Marker's classic short film La Jetée.
In 1996, a deadly virus is unleashed by a group calling themselves the Army of the Twelve Monkeys, destroying much of the world's population and forcing survivors underground. In 2035, prisoner James Cole (Bruce Willis, Die Hard) is chosen to go back in time and help scientists in their search for a cure.
Featuring an Oscar-nominated turn by Brad Pitt (Fight Club) as mental patient Jeffrey Goines, Twelve Monkeys would become Gilliam's most successful film and is now widely regarded as a sci-fi classic. Arrow Films are proud to present the film in a stunning new restoration.

- Reviewed in Canada on December 27, 2020Verified PurchaseThis film is peculiar but certainly worth the watch. The cast is excellent. The future is a bit weird and odd – but they’re goal simple. To go back in time and prevent the spread of a virus that forces humans underground. I enjoy time travel movies – and this film manages to weave together an interesting plot line through time. Bruce, Brad, and Madeline do a great job in their roles.
The five star rating is for the condition of the product. No problems with the case, disc, or shipping of the product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Monkey business
Verified PurchaseA real thriller of a film, carefully crafted and so well-thought out that I used it in a philosophy essay about time-travel at university.
The two main actors - Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis - are so unbelievably good that you can feel both James Cole's anguish and Geoffrey Goines' agitation oozing from the screen. Madeleine Stowe's attempts to rival her male colleagues fall a bit flat - she seems a bit like a jumpy Alanis Morisette in the "Ironic" video rather than the character she is supposed to be playing (it would have been better had Railly remained calmer and more composed as a foil to Cole and Goines' supposed lunacy) but gives a decent performance.
The exquisite location filming and atmospheric use of dirt and decay made me think I was in some Orwell novel - don't watch this without taking a long hot shower afterwards - but the tension between Cole's mission and longing for the "good ol' days" is poorly developed, as is the romance between Cole and Railly - perhaps there isn't supposed to be one, but the on-screen hints were sending confusing mixed messages out, and the film would not have suffered had there been less ambiguity, particularly in the final scenes.
There is an 87 minute "Hamster Factor" documentary also on the DVD but I was so exhausted by the film that to sit through almost as much again immediately afterwards was too much. More information on the cast would have been nice as well, but at the end of the day a good movie should speak for itself - and this one does so at a high volume.

5.0 out of 5 stars 12 Monkeys has never looked this good!
Verified PurchaseUnlike James Cameron's recently released True Lies 4k release- which sometimes looks super waxy, ultra denoised and sharpened by AI "enhancement", Arrow Video takes the opposite approach to 90's film restoration: they preserve natural film grain, and embrace the grittiness of the original work. This is a huge plus for Terry Gilliam's 12 Monkeys, as the dingy, dreamlike aesthetic and storytelling are only enhanced by the inherent qualities of film. The sparkle of processed "noise" picked up in the 4k restoration ranges from subtle to somewhat overt, giving dimly lit corridors and brief moments of sunlight intense contrast and immersion. Image quality is detailed, and colors are accurate. If you're looking for preservation and nostalgia combined, this is the best version so far.
As for the mastering error that others have mentioned over the past couple years, my copy did not have it. Mine was sold by 鶹, and to the best of my observations, I cannot detect any "V2" or "Version 2" etc. printed on the disc or case. Again, I'm reviewing the 4k UHD release only, and from what I've gathered on the Internet, the HD Blu-ray copies from 2018 probably all have this issue.
