- Reviewed in Canada on January 26, 2025Verified Purchase10 good old classics for back in the day. if you're into these older style movies you will most likely like them. Most of them are older and made in B/W, - Jet Pilot is new enough to be in Color.
- Reviewed in Canada on October 25, 2019Verified PurchaseAnother of Universal's excellent low-priced, well balanced collections of lesser known movies within a genre.
The Eagle & The Hawk - Gung-ho US pilots go off to Europe in WWI and quickly find it less glamorous than anticipated. Strong dramatically but badly patched studio and actual aerial photography. B&W
The Last Outpost - Afghan & Sudan WWI settings. Tepid romance sandwiched between fine action sequences. B&W
Wake Island - WWII. Fairly routine account of US Marines' defence of the island. Lots of familiar faces. B&W
Bengal Brigade - Rock Hudson singlehandedly thwarts the 19th Century Sepoy Mutiny in India. Provided you go in expecting fun rather than history it's moderately exciting.
To Hell & Back - Movie adaptation of Audie Murphy's story of his Texas farm boy to most decorated US soldier in WWII.
Battle Hymn - Dull factual WWII story of a man's conflict between his religious beliefs and his duty as a soldier. It neither explores his torment nor makes his service very exciting.
Jet Pilot - Basically a romantic comedy. Ridiculous plot has US pilot (Wayne) placed in charge of Russian pilot (Leigh) accused of being a spy. It's made palatable and even fun by its stars.
In Enemy Country - Excellent WWII spy story. Well acted, believable characters in fast paced, action filled movie.
Raid On Rommel - Title describes the plot but the movie is incredibly slow much of the time. Weakest of the bunch.
Ulzana's Raid - A fine western with Burt Lancaster as a grizzled scout helping the cavalry try to stop an Apache raiding party. Along with 'In Enemy Country' worth the price of the DVD.
Except where noted movies are in colour; widescreen or full screen as appropriate. No extras or subtitles.
- Reviewed in Canada on February 5, 2017Verified PurchaseThe Eagle & The Hawk: 1933 B&W- WW1 Royal Air Force
Cary Grant really was second rate to anyone else in this very interesting movie. Fredric March stole the limelight with a brilliant performance of an air ace driven to insanity by his experiences as a pilot. Definitely rates 9.5 out of 10.
The Last Outpost: 1935 B&W -World War 1 movie set In North Africa
Claude Rains and Gertrude Michaels are superb. It was a good movie, but not great (captivating script that could have been better executed). I rate it a 7.5 out of 10.
Wake Island: 1942 B&W – World War 11 set on Wake Island pitting Marines and civilians against the Japanese air force, navy and their marines.
The movie is a relatively tame compared to the actual account of the conflict itself. It is a fast based action orientated series of battles. Not a great movie in all; however seems reasonably close to the real events. My rating is 6 out of 10.
Bengal Brigade: 1954 Colour Movie set in India during British occupation- 1850’s.
Rock Hudson plays the dashing hero, of course, while history really takes a step back in this relatively fast paced action movie. The acting is very good and the sets are superb. The cinema photography is a delight. The movie revolves around Rock- which is not bad on one level; he really held the plot together. I rate this movie as 6 out of 10.
Battle Hymn: 1956 Technicolor Movie Korean War.
This a fantastic movie with quite a few sub plots. Rock Hudson’s definitive acting part – you really do not appreciate how great an actor he was until you see this movie.. he is superb in his role as a soldier and preacher; the main plot is about reconciling what would normally be conflicting aspects of one’s life; and, through this movie they were reconciled. Other actors worth noting for the exemplarity acting roles included: Anna Kashfi, Don DeFore & James Edwards. There some very good air battle scenes too- captivating on all accounts. My rating is a solid 9 out of 10.
To Hell & Back: 1955 Technicolor Movie set in WW11.
Audie Murphy playing himself in various theatres of war during WW11. It is an interesting biographical account and reveals the amazing person and soldier he was- one of the most decorate soldiers ever. It is a very interesting portrayal of Audie the person. There is plenty of action. I rate it as a solid 8 out of 10.
Jet Pilot: 1957 Technicolor Movie Set in the Cold War – Russia versus USA.
It is a silly very lightweight movie with no redeeming qualities. There is some interesting memorabilia as props. The plot such as it is revolves around Janet Leigh as a gorgeous soviet spy falling in love with John Wayne pretending to be a USA spy – both intent on stealing aeronautical information from the other until love gets in the way.. of course the USA wins; no surprise there- and as it should be! Janet Leigh is the best thing about the movie. Give it a wide berth; I fell asleep watching it. Rating is barely 1 out of 10.
In Enemy Country: 1968 Techniscope Movie set primarily in both France and Germany during WW11.
It is a surprisingly good movie starring Anthony Franciosa, Tom Bell, Guy Stockwell, & and Anjanette Comer. The movie storyline moved along very nicely and there is quite a bit of action. Although not very highly rated by some raters, I certainly would give it 7 out of 10.
Raid On Rommel: 1971 Technicolor Movie set in North Africa – Tobruk WW11
A movie with Richard Burton- predictably decent; he just elevates every other actor’s capabilities because he is there and performing. It is a farfetched fictional yarn, but if you do not know anything about the war in North Africa, it would seem a highly credible account. Karl Otto Alberty also gave a convincing version of a German Officer pursuing Burton as a British commando. It is a good action movie. I give it a solid 7 out of 10 on its own merits.
Ulzana’s Raid”: 1972 Technicolor movie set in Arizona – Western Apache- US Calvary
Based on a true account of Ulazana’s life. The backdrop to the story was the oppression and suppression of the Apache nation. It is a well done movie and provides good historical insight. Much maligned in the past I think it deserves high praise not for its history (although important and relevant), but also for its acting. I rate it 8.5 out of 10.

- Reviewed in Canada on June 17, 2013Verified PurchaseReceived this collection of movies a short while ago from 鶹. What an amazing collection of old Universal movies. I won't rate each movie as I haven't watched them all yet. For what amounts to a dollar plus change a movie how can you go wrong. For me I was thrilled when I saw it included Ulzana's Raid which is one of the best westerns ever made and very hard to get a good copy of at a resonable cost. This Burt Lancaster movie is in widescreen format and the sound and picture quality were very good.I would have paid the cost of this DVD just for this movie. Yes there are some B grade movies but still fun to watch on a day when the weather isn't the best. There are no extras with each movie that I have seen so far.I also ordered a similar collection of movies from 鶹 that was also distributed by Universal and contains ten old western movies with big name stars. That should arrive this week with actors such as John Wayne,Alan Ladd and Randolph Scott. Again do not hesitate to order either one of these two collection sets as the transfer to DVD from Universal is very good.
