الفكرة التي يقوم عليها كتابُ الاستشراق هي استعمالُ النقد الإنسانيِّ للكشف عن مجالات الصراع، وإدخالُ سلسلةٍ من الأفكار والتَّحليلات أطول نَفَسًا من الدفقات المتقطِّعة من الغضب المترتِّب على الجدل الذي يعطِّل الفكرَ ويحبسنا في عباراتٍ ومجادلاتٍ عدائيَّةٍ تستهدف تثبيتَ الهويَّة الجمعيَّة العدوانيَّة بدلًا من التفاهم وتبادل الأفكار. وقد دعوتُ ما أحاول فعلَه «humanism» [المذهب الإنسانيّ أو الفلسفة الإنسانيَّة]، وهذا اصطلاحٌ أُصرُّ على استعماله بعناد، رغم استهانة نفرٍ من نقَّادِ ما بعد الحداثة المتحذلقين به ـ وما أعنيه بالمذهب الإنسانيَّ: إذابة ما دعاه الشاعر الإنكليزيُّ وِلْيَم بْليك بالقيود التي صنعها العقلُ في بوتقته، لكيْ يتمكَّن المرء من استعمال عقله تاريخيًّا ومنطقيًّا من أجل الفهم القائم على التأمُّل والإفصاح الحقيقيّ. أضف إلى ذلك أنَّ المذهب الإنسانيَّ يعزِّزه إحساسٌ بالانتماء إلى مفسِّرين آخرين ومجتمعاتٍ وحقبٍ أخرى: ولذلك، فإنْ شئنا الدقَّة قلنا إنَّه لا وجود لمن يمكن أن يُدعى بالإنسانيِّ المنعزل
